    Using Built-In ASP Components

In this tutorial, we will be working with three of Microsoft's built-in ASP components. The Ad Rotator, Content Linker and the Browser Capabilities Component.

    Simple CMS Tutorial

The definition of a content management system is a as diverse as all the people creating them, but at the very core of a CMS is the concept of separating Website layout and design from content. By doing this you provide a means for the Web Developer to do his job and not get bogged down with endless requests for content changes/additions, more importantly though, this empowers the non-Developer, (content creators) to update/create their own web pages. This tutorial shows how to create a simple CMS in ASP.

    Using Include FIles

As a website gets bigger it can become more difficult and time consuming to maintain. One way to help manage this is with the use of include files. Using includes will cut down on time by limiting the amount of code or html you will have to add to new pages or time spent updating existing pages.

    Considering Different Browsers

Many times it is necessary to consider the clients browser. Some things are not cross browser compliant. Some things look right in IE but are a little different in NS. The opposite is true as well. By looking at the USER AGENT we can do a little server side scripting to show what is needed depending on the browser. Here is how.

    Web Site Customization Sample

This is a simple font customization sample that illustrates how to easily let your visitors pick whatever settings they prefer on your site. It covers the basic process of letting a user pick their settings, previewing the resulting effect, and then saving their configuration for future visits.

A 'Print This Page' Script Using the MS-XMLHTTP object and Regular Expressions

This 2-page article describes how to create a Printer Friendly Page using Microsoft's XMLHTTP component along with regular expressions. It shows how to use XMLHTTP to perform an actual HTTP GET request for the page that you wish to display in a Printer Friendly format. Then, it utilizes regular expressions to pick out chunks of text that the Web page author has defined to not appear in the Printer Friendly format. A neat read highlighting the capabilities of the XMLHTTP component and regular expressions.

    Page Template Functionality

Based on an HTML template file, this ASP sample code formats pages of a web site dynamically. It allows you to change the appearance, layout, fonts, colours and pagewidth throughout the whole site just by replacing one template file. It also allows you to display the same pages using different templates: printer friendly versions, small screens, handheld versions, webTV versions, search engine pages, etc.

    Date Dependent Content

The author notes "Displaying content depending on what the current date value is a powerful and effective tool that adds value to any website. Whether it is to showcase a limited time offer, or to “automatically” update pages with new content while you’re miles away." This example code repeats the process to three times to demonstrate the full effects of date dependent content.

    Syndicate Your Content With ASP

This tutorial demonstrates a simple way of implementing a tip of the day application that can be syndicated out to other sites.
